In the last primary election, I saw some excellent candidates miss a chance, while special interests crept into their place. Religious extremists are working hard to gain power during each election, and they already own the highest seats in county leadership.

Do better, Lyon County! Let’s pay attention to what’s happening, especially when it comes to protecting our children.

What originally caught my attention, was the fight for School Board. A couple years ago, I saw a page shared on Facebook, claiming the school board was trying to silence the parents of Lyon County. I was never a good student, and the metalhead 90’s teenager in me was pumping fists in favor of whatever was being proposed.

Since I had kids in the schools, I decided to fulfill my civic/parent duties and attended a school board meeting. I showed up early, so I was able to watch the crowd form in the audience. A bunch of people came in the doors at once, filling the room with faces I recognized – but not in a good way. They were all from the church that once tried to put me out of a job through a County Commissioner named Ken Gray, who was the ringmaster for 2018 Lyon County Question 1, the failed attempt to ban legal brothels in Lyon County.

As the meeting proceeded, I saw an obvious coordinated effort led by Pastor Garry, a much fatter Jim Davis [congrats on the weight loss, Jim], Deanne Davis, Calvary’s secretary Sandy Harris, and some creepy new face belonging to a man named Greg Clausen, who I deducted to be the author of all the scripts being read during public comment. There was a noticeable pattern between the words the Calvary members read off and the attacks coming out of his mouth.

The show was very entertaining to witness, so I went to YouTube to watch prior meetings leading up to that one. The holy mob of born-again geriatric California refugees relentlessly attacked the Superintendent, Vice Superintendent, and every Trustee on the board, except Parsons and Hendrix. This pattern continued until they leveraged their cult’s numbers and campaign money to successfully vote out the members of the board that were not part of their plan.

While on the campaign trail, I got Whisler to admit Greg Clausen was the creator of the Save Lyon Schools group on Facebook. The day after the election, the entire page mysteriously disappeared. I looked into the trio who campaigned together, and saw very generous donations from Mr. Clausen. I still wonder how his investment is paying off.

Today, there is another push to block more qualified candidates on the school board, in favor of those friendlier to the special interest group. If those two seats lose to the cult, your kids will be under the rule of Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley and their so-called “Community Impact Team”. Since the youngest of my kids graduated last year, I no longer have skin in the game, but I can’t just sit back and say nothing!

Prior to her appointment to a vacated seat on the School Board, I had the opportunity to talk shop with now Trustee Day over a coffee. Her experience with HR in Rural Nevada Counseling gives her an amazingly unique perspective and experience I felt the current board needed. And she DID NOT disappoint! From the very moment she sat in that chair, she was straight to business. With a polite, PROFESSIONAL approach, Kalie Day spoke on and voted on policies with nothing but the school and the kids in mind. Even under pressure from the Trustees who roll with the cult, she kept her cool and just did her job.

The last School Board meeting got a little heated when Hendrix, Parsons, and a couple of the Community Impact Team members in the audience tried and failed to argue against Trustee Day’s proposals for better transparency and and accountability for board members and the Superintendent.

I am actually surprised and impressed by Trustee Whisler, who doesn’t seem to be following the script of the other two he campaigned with. He spoke with common sense and integrity during this debate.
