  • Supervise swimmers and ensure their safety in and around the pool area.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Provide excellent customer service and assist patrons with inquiries and concerns.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks and keep pool facilities clean.

  • Must be age 15 by the last day of American Red Cross training to receive Lifeguard Certification.
  • Strong swimming skills and comfort in deep water.
  • Ability to remain calm and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Enjoy working outdoors and interacting with youth.
  • Responsible and reliable with good communication skills.
  • Previous lifeguarding experience is a plus, but not required.

  • Certification fees are paid for by each lifeguard.
  • At the completion of the summer season, lifeguards will be reimbursed for half of the cost.
  • If the lifeguard returns for the following summer season, they will receive the second half of the reimbursement at the completion of the season.

Under general supervision, ensures the safety of patrons of the Mason Valley Swimming Pool by preventing and responding to emergencies.


  • This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
  • Provide first aid and/or emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Enforce rules and regulations in all areas of the facility.
  • Complete various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility to include, but not limited to, pool areas, decks, restrooms, and lobby.
  • Teach group and individual swimming lessons.
  • Organize and oversee pool parties.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed to include, but not limited to, answering phones, collecting fees and providing change, and running pool-related errands.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as required.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism with staff and patrons.
  • Represent the Mason Valley Swimming Pool with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Lifeguards must be age 15 by the last day of American Red Cross training to receive Lifeguard Certification.


Knowledge of:

  • Basic swimming pool health, safety, and maintenance principles and practices.
  • Lifeguarding techniques, including First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Skill in:

  • Rescue methods and techniques
  • Administering basic First Aid and CPR
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Enforce safety and health rules using strong interpersonal and communication skills with people of all ages.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and patrons.

Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Lifeguard Certification

Work environment includes exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, and occasionally to toxic or caustic chemicals. The work day may include frequent contact with members of the public, periodic contact with angry and/or upset individuals, frequent interruptions of planned work activitites by telephone calls, pool visitors, employees, and in response to unplanned events. The noise level in the work environment may be moderately loud. Frequent and often extreme sun exposure. Sun protection is required through means of skin protective lotion, proper attire, hat/visor, and sunglasses and is the responsibility of the employee.

While performing duties of a lifeguard, the employee will need the strength, stamina, and coordination to frequently swim, walk, sit, bend, stoop, and stand for long periods of time. Regular use of hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional climbing or balancing. Occasionally lifting and/or moving over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Hearing and speech to communication in person and over the telephone.
